For Your Information

Black History Month

During the month of February, Calgary Board of Education students and staff will celebrate and explore the many contributions of Black Canadians, peoples, and communities worldwide. Black History Month is an opportunity for schools to amplify and spotlight the innovative, courageous, and inspiring voices, stories, and contributions of Black Canadians and communities. Throughout the month of February, the Calgary Public Library is hosting events dedicated to celebrating the lives, legacies, and voices of Black peoples and communities.

On Tuesday, Feb. 13, the Central Library will feature Black History Month: Jon Cornish “Power and Privilege in an Intersectional Life." Cornish will unravel the complexities of his unique journey as a person of mixed heritage, navigating a world rife with stereotypes and misconceptions. He will highlight the intricate interplay of race, culture, and geography in shaping identity while challenging the audience to re-examine their perceptions, biases, and often-mistaken assumptions.

On Sunday, Feb. 25, the Central Library in partnership with the Chinook County Historical Society will be hosting a screening and discussion of the film John Ware Reclaimed by filmmaker Cheryl Foggo, which follows her quest to re-examine the mythology surrounding John Ware, the Black cowboy who settled Alberta before the turn of the 20th Century. Foggo's research uncovers who this iconic figure might have been, and what his legacy means in terms of anti-Black racism.

Newcomer Settlement Partnerships and Resources

The CBE English As An Additional Language (EAL) Service Unit would like to share community supports which includes our partnerships with both the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society (CCIS) and Calgary Bridge Foundation for Youth (CBFY). The Settlement Agencies provide integral free program support and services to newcomer and refugee families. See flyer under Resources.

Seven Sacred Teachings - February

The Turtle teaches us TRUTH. Truth is to know and understand all the seven teachings and to remain faithful to them. To know truth is to know and understand all of the original laws and to remain faithful to them. It is said that in the beginning, the Grandmother Turtle was present to ensure that the laws would never be lost or forgotten. On the back of a Turtle are the 13 moon, each representing the truth of one cycle of the Earth's rotations around the sun. The 28 markings on her back represent the cycle of the moon and of a woman's body. The shell of the Turtle represents the body and serves as a reminder of the teachings.

As always, please call the office at 403-777-6350 ext 0 if you have any questions or concerns.

Have a wonderful weekend!
